Matthew Lessner's first feature film The Woods made history as the first film to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival that used Kickstarter for production financing. The Woods is part psychological experiment, part performance art project, and the first feature from Matthew Lessner, a young director who comes very close to getting at some larger truth, and yet … remains so far away. It is an experimental experience in every way, a rigorous assault on both logic and the senses, and the same things that make it wonderful are identical to the things that make it fairly incomprehensible. Almost a mockumentary about one group’s month-long foray into the woods in an attempt to stand for something, the film is wildly meandering and much of it feels improvisational.
